Ornaments worth Rs. 10 lakh, cash Rs. 35,000 looted from Karimganj temple; investigation on

KARIMGANJ: A gang of dacoits looted gold and silver ornaments worth Rs. 10 lakh and Rs. 35,000 in cash from a temple Sri Sri Narsing Mandir at Tangbari village village under Nilambazar police station in Karimganj district late on Sunday night.

The temple’s owner Rajesh Chakraborty lodged an FIR with police on Monday. According to the complainant, a gang of six to seven dacoits barged into his house at Tangbari, about 7km from Karimganj town, around 1:50am on Sunday night and attacked him as a result of which he got injured. Thereafter, the dacoits tied his wife and daughter and demanded Rs. 1 lakh from them. He (Rajesh) told them that they did not have any money following which the dacoits asked him to provide the key of a box of the temple which was there in the house.

Terrified by the dacoits, he handed over the key to them after which they opened the box and took away cash and gold ornaments from it. The dacoits then took the temple’s key from him, opened the temple and took away all the ornaments (of gold and silver) from there. Altogether, Rs. 35,000 in cash and ornaments worth Rs. 10 lakh was looted. Besides, three mobile phones which cost around 20,000 were looted, the complainant alleged.

Based on the FIR, a probe was launched by the police. However, there was no arrest made in connection with the incident, as per last reports available.
