SILCHAR: The National Institute of Technology, Silchar, one of the most prestigious educational institutions in Barak Valley, has been running without adequate non-teaching staff for several months.
According to sources, 227 non-teaching posts in NIT Silchar have been lying vacant for the past many months. The total number of non-teaching posts (including officer, technical higher, ministerial higher, technical lower, ministerial lower and supporting staff posts) sanctioned is 303, whereas the present number of non-teaching staff is 76. The advertisement for appointment of non-teaching staff in the institution was given last in March, 2019, sources said.
Besides the non-teaching vacant posts, 85 posts of teaching staff have been lying vacant for months. The total number of sanctioned posts in teaching staff (including professors, associate professors and assistant professors) is 282, whereas the number of teaching staff at present is 197, the sources said.
An RTI was filed a few months ago to know details about teaching and non-teaching posts in NIT Silchar. The reply to the RTI has confirmed about the vacant posts of non-teaching and teaching staff at NIT, Silchar. A copy of the RTI’s reply is available with Daily Pachali.
NIT Silchar director Sivaji Bandyopadhyay could not be reached for a comment.
NIT, Silchar, one of the 31 National Institutes of Technology in India, was established in 1967 as a Regional Engineering College in Assam. In 2002 it was upgraded to the status of National Institute of Technology and was declared as Institute of National Importance under the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007.
