The recent spike of positive cases in Cachar since the last few days has resulted in panic among the people. Cachar recorded the highest single day spike of 159 positive cases on last Tuesday. The total coronavirus count in Assam went upto 26,772 with 1680 positive cases on Tuesday. Under such circumstances, people taking to social media are raising the demand for a lockdown. During the recent visit to Silchar on 20th July, Pijush Hazarika, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, told the Deputy Commissioner to hold discussions with people’s representatives and senior citizens on enforcing total lockdown in market places. Deputy Commissioner, Keerthi Jalli on Wednesday informed that enforcing total lockdown would hit the common man hard and would deprive them of their livelihoods. However, she also added that the administration would take all the segments of people into confidence before placing a proposal to the State Government. She said that based on a general consensus that was likely to emerge from a meeting with senior citizens, merchants’ associations and other segments of society slated for 23rd July, the administration would decide the future course of action.
