On June 8, 2018, a horrific mob lynching at Karbi Anglong took the life of two young man of Guwahati, Nilotpol Das and Abhijeet Nath- who became the victim of false social media report. They were killed when they went for a short trip to Dokmora, Karbi Anglong where people mistook them as child abductors and killed them. A video went viral where it was seen that Nilotpol was saying that he was Assamese and they were begging for their life, yet they were killed by the mob, brutally.
Case was lodged and the accused were taken to court. However the very slow proceedings of the court in regard to this case is causing pain to the family members, relatives, friends and other loved ones of the departed soul. Although the recent verdict of Robin Phukan, the District and Session Judge, sentencing accused Sanjay Rajwar to death and 24 others to life imprisonment for murdering the resident doctor of Teok Tea Estate hospital Dr. Deben Dutta,in Jorhat district in August 2019, has given renewed hopes to the family of Abhijeet Nath and Nilotpal Das since both the cases have similarities in the nature as Dr. Dutta too was killed in mob lynching. But, it is more than 2 years now that Neel and Abhi were killed and yet they and their families are to get justice.
Of late, the hon’ble court has scheduled a the date of 6 November, 2020 for the hearing of the Neel and Abhi case. Due to COVID-19, the proceedings had slowed down as the physical courts were closed. Obviously, the families of both Abhijeet and Nilotpol are sad as well as anxious and frustrated as they do not want any more delay and want justice for their children as soon as possible. It is worthy to note that even when hon’ble CM of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal ordered a probe for the case of mob lynching at Dokmora, yet the two, Abhi and Neel are to get justice. Now the questions that arises are why are the proceedings so slow that it is taking more than two years that the case is still going on and when will they get justice? If Late. Dr. Dutta got justice, why are Neel and Abhi still not getting justice?
