Dr. Deben Dutta, a 73 year old doctor of a dispensary in Teok Tea Estate, was launched in 2019. 25 people were convicted for lynching as announced by the Jorhat District Session Judge Court.
Death sentence has been granted by the Court for the prime accused behind the lynching, Sanjay Rajowar. Sentence for life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs. 1000 was awarded to the other 24 convicts who are namely, Sanijib Rajowar, Suresh Rajowar, Ajoy Majhi, Anil Majhi, Upendra Bhumij, Ratul Rajowar, Bablu Rajowar, Dipak Rajowar, Milon Rajowar, Rinku Majhi, Mishilal Majhi, Sibcharan Mahali, Debeswar Rajowar, Kartik Bhumiz, Sanjoy Rajowar, Kalicharan Mahali, Rameshwar Bhumiz, Siba Mahali, Rahul Rajowar, Kalanag Majhi, Manoj Majhi and Rinku Bakti.
The lynching incindent took place due to the allegation of Dr. Dutta delaying the treatment of a plantation worker, Somra Majhi.
All the 25 tea workers were declared convicts earlier on October 13 by Judge Robin Phukan of the District and Sessions court, Jorhat, under section 302/149, 342/149, 353/148, 353/149 of IPC.
There were 32 people in total who were accused in the lynching case out of which, death of one took place during the investigation. Six were declared innocent.
