On 28/07/2020 (Tuesday) the forest officials were on their routine checkup,checking all the trucks passing from Lailapur for any illegal timber. A forest officer then came across a lorry TS 08 UB 1622 at 11:30 emitting a peculiar smell . the officer found something suspicious ,on asking the driver , he said there is nothing but some rotten fruits , however the officer was not convinced with his answer and investigated the lorry and found set of exotic animals packed in a cartoon box which contained .
1) A Kangaroo
2) 6 Macaw Parrots
3) 3 Tortoises
4) 2 Monkey
Two accused named Narsimha Reddy and Navnath Tukaram have been detained . later on, in an investigation they confessed that the consignment was going to Guwahati.
The Investigating team includes
1) Shri Uttam Das, forester – 1, Beat Forest officer, Lailapur Forest Subbeat,
2) Hemojit Singha , Forest Guard,
3) Rajib Barman, Boatman,
4) Ali Ahmed lascar, casual worker
The forest Range officer of Hawaithang Range , Dholai Shri D.Deori ,AFS is investigating the matter under the direction of Shri Sunnydeo Choudhury,IFS, DFO Cachar Forest Division who have directed the forest officials to ascertain the health of wildlife by local vet. The exact species identification is going on.
Altogether a very commendable job by Cachar Forest department . we need this kind of activities on a regular note.
